I thought it was about time I started a blog. A way to let people know the issues that we are faced with each day, a way to express my feelings and a way to help people understand the life of a parent with a child with ASD. I enjoy writing and have been inspired by reading blogs from other parents in similar situations and have found comfort in realising that we are not alone. So here is my first attempt!
My boy is 7 years old and has a diagnosis of Asperger’s Sydnrome. He was diagnosed in January 2015 when he was 5 years old. Since then his behaviour has developed significantly and we now firmly believe that he closely matches the profile of Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome (PDA). As many parents of PDA children will appreciate, getting a diagnosis is not easy. We are currently on a mission to have him reassessed as we believe this is vitally important in our quest to ensure that he has the right support at school.
School is not easy for my boy. He has recently moved up to the junior school and the increased demands and expectations are raising his anxiety and resulting in disruptive behaviour and frequent refusal to participate in lessons. Unsurprisingly this has lead to a knock on effect at home as his need to control situations at home grows stronger.
Sunday evenings are an anxious time as we begin to worry what the week ahead will bring……
